ICC Champions Trophy: Joe Root, Ben Stokes remain in mix
England cricket team's selector Luke Wright has confirmed that Joe Root and Ben Stokes are still being considered for the 2025 Champions Trophy squad. This announcement comes despite neither player having participated in a 50-over match since last year's ICC World Cup. The duo is not a part of the ODI series against Australia in September, or November's tour to West Indies due to England's Test tours to Pakistan and New Zealand. Here's more.
England's preparation for Champions Trophy
The Champions Trophy is set to commence in mid-February in Pakistan. England has scheduled three ODIs in India at the beginning of that month as part of their tournament preparation. These matches will provide Root, Stokes, and other all-format players like Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, their only chance to play 50-over cricket before the tournament begins.
Wright's stance on Root and Stokes's participation
Wright emphasized England's intention to field their strongest team for the Champions Trophy. He stated, "We'll want to be as strong as possible," adding that the absence of Test cricket during this period provides an opportunity for them to do so. Despite a packed schedule leading up to Christmas, he assured there will be chances for players like Root and Stokes to prove their worth ahead of the tournament.
Root and Stokes's SA20 commitments
Both Root (Paarl Royals) and Stokes (MI Cape Town) have committed to the SA20 tournament, which runs from January 9 to February 8. This commitment means they are likely to miss January's T20I series in India. However, if selected, they will join the team for the ODIs starting on February 6. These matches could serve as crucial preparation for their potential participation in the Champions Trophy.
Wright defends decision to rest Root
Wright defended the decision to rest Root for the Australia series, stating that England has "asked a lot of Joe" throughout his international career. He emphasized Root's significant contributions to English cricket and expressed confidence in his ability to perform in major tournaments. The selector also highlighted Root's versatility as both a batsman and bowler, underscoring his value to the team.
Numbers of Root and Stokes in ODI cricket
In 171 ODIs, Root has 6,522 runs at an average of 47.60. He has smashed 16 hundreds and 39 fifties. Meanwhile, Stokes is closing in on 3,500 ODI runs (3,463). With the ball, he has claimed 74 wickets.
