Austin Waugh, Steve Waugh's son, in Australia's U-19 WC squad
Former Australian captain Steve Waugh's son, Austin, is all set to follow his father's footsteps and rewrite history when he takes the field at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. Australia won the U-19 tournament in 2010 under the leadership of Mitch Marsh but missed the last edition in Bangladesh. The legendary cricketer's son will be keen on winning the title again.
Stepping into his father's shoes
17-year-old Austin Waugh is a right-hand batsman who also bowls right arm medium pace, just like his father. He made his Sydney first class debut earlier this year. The talented all-rounder scored an unbeaten ton in the final of the Under -17 national championships last year. He was a part of the U-19 Aussie side that took on Sri Lanka in 2017.
Can Austin emulate his legendary father?
There are very few father-son duos who have been successful in cricket and the number is even smaller when it comes to representing the country at the ICC World Cup. Steve Waugh was one of Australia's most successful captains leading his country to World Cup glory in 1999 in England. Waugh was also a part of Australia World Cup winning team in 1987.
Sangha to lead Australia in U-19 World Cup
Jason Sangha, who made the headlines last month after becoming the youngest Australian to score first class century will lead the 15 member squad. Cricket Australia's chief James Sutherland's son Will Sutherland is also a part of the side. The young Aussies are placed in Group B and will kick-start their campaign against India on January 14 at Bay Oval.
