Wawrinka defeats Djokovic to clinch 2016 US Open title
Stan Wawrinka won his first US Open title by defeating world number one Novak Djokovic in the finals. The 31-year old Swiss player won 6-7 (1/7), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3, becoming the oldest player to win the title since 35-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1970. Wawrinka has reached three Grand Slam finals till now and the result has always been on his side.
Stanislas Wawrinka
Stanislas Wawrinka is a professional tennis player from Switzerland. He started playing tennis from the age of eight, and gave up schooling at 15 to focus completely on the sport. At the age of 18, he won the 2003 Junior French Open Championship and ranked seventh in the world in the juniors ranking. He considers that he performs best on clay surfaces.
First win and Olympic gold
After turning professional in 2002, his first ATP Tour victory came in 2006 by winning the Croatian Open. In 2008, Stan entered in the top 10 rankings in world. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he teamed up with fellow Swiss tennis player Roger Federer in the men's doubles event. The duo won gold in the event.
First Grand Slam title for Stan Wawrinka
Stan Wawrinka beat Rafael Nadal to win the 2014 Australian Open Championship, his maiden Grand Slam title. He achieved his career best ranking by becoming world number three with the win. Wawrinka became the first player to defeat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in a single Grand Slam tournament. He also defeated Roger Federer later that year to win his first Masters 1000 title.
Wawrinka wins French Open
Unsuccessful in defending his Australian Open title in 2015, Wawrinka defeated his old foe Novak Djokovic to win his first French Open Championship.
