Sri Lanka beat Windies, 2nd ODI: List of records broken
Sri Lanka powered past West Indies in the second ODI encounter on Wednesday in Hambantota. With this win, the Lankans took a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. West Indies' hopes were dented after Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis struck respective hundreds. Lanka posted 345/8 in 50 overs. WI failed to chase down the target. Here are the records broken.
How did the match pan out?
Lanka lost two quick wickets and were reeling at 9/2. Mendis joined hands with Fernando and the two added a 239-run stand for the third wicket. Fernando slammed a 123-ball 127, whereas, Mendis hit 119. Some useful contributions down the order helped Lanka post 345. In reply, Shai Hope's 51 wasn't enough as Windies crumbled under pressure. Wanindu Hasaranga (3/30) shined for the hosts.
Fernando and Mendis slam crucial milestones
Fernando slammed his second career ODI century. The opener also registered his highest ODI score. Mendis also brought up a second career ODI ton and registered his highest score in the 50-over format. The two now have the fourth-highest partnership for the third wicket in ODI cricket. This was Sri Lanka's highest partnership for the third wicket in ODIs.
Hope continues his merry in Asia, Cottrell and Joseph impress
Sheldon Cottrell (4/67) now has 48 career ODI scalps in 34 matches. Youngster Alzarri Joseph (3/57) raced to 44 ODI wickets. WI opener Shai Hope slammed his 16th career ODI half-century. Interestingly, Hope amassed his 10th fifty-plus score in only 16 innings in Asia. The wicket-keeper batsman raced to 3,217 runs in 72 ODI innings.
Sri Lanka post a special ODI record
Sri Lanka posted their third-highest ODI total against West Indies. Meanwhile, Lanka's total is now the highest score in ODI history without a six. The previous best was 333 by England against Australia in Sydney in 2011.
