SL batters with this forgettable ODI record against India
Mohammed Siraj got India off to an incredible start in the 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. He dismissed Pathum Nissanka on the match's first ball, having delivered a wicket-maiden. As per Cricbuzz, Nissanka became the third SL batter to be dismissed on the first ball of an ODI against India. Here are the Lankan batters with this record.
Sanath Jayasuriya, Colombo, 2002 (Zaheer Khan)
According to Cricbuzz, former opener Sanath Jayasuriya became the first Sri Lanka batter to be dismissed on the first ball of an ODI against India. Indian left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan uprooted Jayasuriya in the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy final. The Lankans scored 222/7 in 50 overs, with Zaheer taking three wickets. India were 38/1 when rain washed out the match.
Upul Tharanga, Delhi, 2009 (Zaheer Khan)
Zaheer once again showcased his first-over exploits, this time in the 2009 Delhi ODI against Sri Lanka. He dismissed opener Upul Tharanga on the match's first ball. However, the match was abandoned after just 23.3 overs (83/5). Notably, the wicket at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium was deemed unfit as the Lankan batters received injuries due to uneven bounce.
Upul Tharanga, Dambulla, 2010 (Praveen Kumar)
Tharanga was yet again on the receiving end, in the 2010 Sri Lanka Triangular Series against India in Dambulla. Praveen Kumar gave India a perfect start after knocking over Tharanga on the match's first ball. The Lankans were later bowled out for 170 in 46.1 overs. Virender Sehwag's unbeaten 99 later propelled India to a six-wicket win.
Pathum Nissanka, Colombo, 2024 (Mohammed Siraj)
As mentioned, Nissanka became the third Lankan batter to be dismissed on the first ball of an ODI against India. Siraj outfoxed him with a good-length delivery on the off stump. Wicket-keeper KL Rahul took the catch as Nissanka nicked it.
