SL vs NZ: Spinner Ramesh Mendis returns after a year
Sri Lanka have announced their Playing XI for the first Test against New Zealand, set to commence on September 18. The team will look to bolster its ICC World Test Championship standings following a historic victory against England at The Oval. Notably, spinner Ramesh Mendis is making a comeback after being away from the team for over a year. His last Test appearance was in July 2023.
Sri Lanka's strategy shift for New Zealand Test
Sri Lanka's team composition has shifted from an all-pace attack in the final Test against England, to include two lead spinners for the upcoming match. Prabath Jayasuriya, who participated in two Tests during the England tour, is also rejoining the team after missing out on the final game. The pace attack will be led by Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara.
Changes and exclusions in Sri Lanka's Test squad
Besides, top-order batter Oshada Fernando has also returned to Sri Lanka's Test squad after an 18-month hiatus. However, despite his strong performance with the A team, he may face challenges securing a spot due to a well-established batting order. Notably, opening batter Nishan Madushka has been left out of Sri Lanka's squad for the two-Test series against New Zealand at home.
