Tim Southee steps down as New Zealand's Test captain: Details
Tim Southee, the experienced cricketer and former Test captain of New Zealand, has decided to step down from his leadership role. This comes just ahead of a three-match series against India, set to kick off on October 16. Tom Latham, who has previously captained the team in nine matches, will now lead this 15-member squad that includes Southee. Here are further details.
Southee's career and captaincy record
Southee has had a stellar cricketing journey, featuring in 102 Tests since his debut in 2008. He has bagged 382 wickets at 29.87. He took over the captaincy from Kane Williamson in December 2022 and has led New Zealand in 14 Test matches with a balanced record of six wins, six losses and two draws. Despite stepping down as captain, Southee affirmed his continued support for his teammates and wished Latham well in his new role.
An absolute honour and a privilege, says Southee on captaincy
"Captaining the BLACKCAPS in a format that's so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege," said Southee, as per NZC. "I've always tried to put the team first throughout my career and I believe this decision is the best for the team." Southee added he can best serve the team moving forward by focusing on his performances on the field and getting back to his best. He wants to help New Zealand win Test matches.
NZ were tamed by the Lankans
New Zealand were trounced 2-0 by Sri Lanka in the just concluded Test series in Galle. The Lankans won the first Test by 63 runs before taming the Kiwis by an innings and 154 runs in the 2nd Test.
