Cricket South Africa confirms Bangladesh tour for two-Test series
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has given the green light for a two-match Test series against Bangladesh, kicking off on October 21. This is a major win for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which was eager to host South Africa despite some security worries. The BCB had reassured CSA's security team that they would meet all safety protocols for the tour. Notably, the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup was recently shifted from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
BCB director expresses relief over international cricket's return
Nazmul Abedin, the director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), couldn't hide his relief over the return of international cricket to Bangladesh. He admitted that there were worries about how the world viewed the country's safety, but he was heartened by the fact that others now see Bangladesh as a safe place. Abedin also expressed hope that if they successfully host South Africa, other teams will feel more confident about visiting Bangladesh in the future.
CSA conducted security assessment in Bangladesh
A detailed security check was done by CSA's Operations Manager, Team Security Manager, Safety and Security Consultant, and a rep from the South African Cricketers's Association. After this inspection in Bangladesh, CSA has given the series the thumbs up. The Proteas Men are all set to land in Dhaka on October 16, just in time for their first Test match against Bangladesh, starting October 21.
Security concerns and upcoming matches
South Africa's worries about safety in Bangladesh were mainly due to some anti-government protests back in July-August, which eventually led to Sheikh Hasina's government collapsing. Because of these security fears, the Women's T20 World Cup was shifted from Bangladesh to the UAE. But, CSA sources told ESPNcricinfo earlier this month that they were assured the situation in Bangladesh has now "settled."
South Africa's standing in World Test Championship
South Africa have only six Test matches left in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle. They have already played six, winning two, losing three, and drawing one. Currently sitting sixth on the points table, they need to win at least five of their remaining games to qualify for next year's final at Lord's. The last time South Africa and Bangladesh clashed in a Test series was back in 2022.
