Quinton de Kock ruled-out for rest of series against India
With mounting injury concerns for the top players, South Africa's situation went from bad to worse. Quinton de Kock is the latest player who will miss rest of the ODI and T20I series against India. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been ruled out after sustaining a wrist injury during the 2nd ODI at Centurion. Here we look at Proteas' woes during the series.
It began with Steyn!
South Africa's injury woes began as early as their first Test against India. After the third day of 1st Test in Cape Town, pacer Dale Steyn was sidelined for remainder of the series owing to significant damage to his left heel. Steyn's injury didn't affect them too much as the home side went on to register a 2-1 Test series win.
Signs of trouble with ABD's injury
First signs of real trouble for hosts began as their star batsman, AB de Villiers was ruled out of the first three ODIs against India due to a finger injury. With recovery expected to take up to two weeks, the South African side is hopeful of his return only after 3rd ODI, which under current circumstances could very well be ODI series decider.
Then came the blow as skipper got injured
Despite a loss, South Africa provided a competitive first ODI with solid performance from skipper Faf du Plessis. They were soon left without Faf's leadership as he had to sit out of remainder of the series after fracturing his finger in the 1st ODI. It was all downhill from there for the hosts as India trounced them by 9 wickets in the 2nd ODI.
Opportunity for India to whitewash South Africa in South Africa
With so many of top South African players ruled out due to injuries, chances of a series win are heavily skewed in favor of India. Having already taken a 2-0 lead in the 6-match series, India may not just come away with their first ever ODI series win against South Africa on South African soil, but also can think of a 6-0 series whitewash.
