Sourav Ganguly expresses concern over Pakistan's cricket team's decline
Former Indian cricket team captain, Sourav Ganguly, has voiced his concerns about the current state of Pakistan's cricket. This comes in the wake of Pakistan's recent Test series defeat to Bangladesh and their early exits from both the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024. Ganguly emphasized that there seems to be a significant lack of talent in the Pakistani squad compared to previous generations.
Ganguly's comparison of past and present Pakistani squads
Ganguly drew comparisons between the current Pakistani team and past squads. "I see a genuine dearth of talent in the country. Every time we think of Pakistan, we remember Miandad, Wasim, Waqar, Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Yousuf, and Younis Khan," Ganguly said at a promotional event in Kolkata as quoted by PTI. He further noted that while these names are synonymous with Pakistan cricket's glory days, they do not guarantee success in today's competitive landscape.
Ganguly urges introspection within Pakistan cricket
Ganguly urged those involved in Pakistan cricket to address this issue. He said, "The people connected with the sport in Pakistan will have to look into it. I'm not saying this with disrespect. Pakistan of the old had some great cricketers, which I don't see in this squad." His comments highlight a need for introspection and action within the Pakistani cricket establishment to revive their team's performance on the global stage.
Ganguly's views on Rishabh Pant's cricketing journey
In the same event, Ganguly also shared his thoughts on Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant. He believes that Pant is on track to become a Test cricket legend, but needs to improve his performance in shorter formats. This comes after Pant's return to the Test side following a life-threatening car accident in December 2022. "I consider Rishabh Pant one of India's best Test batsmen," Ganguly stated, expressing confidence in his abilities.
