Kolkata rape-murder case: Ganguly changes DP to black, netizens react
In response to criticism that he downplayed the severity of the rape and murder case involving a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has altered his approach. He recently blacked out his display picture on social media platform "X" to show solidarity, which has elicited mixed reactions. Ganguly, who faced backlash for reportedly labeling the incident as a "stray event," clarified on Saturday that his comments were taken out of context.
Why does this story matter?
On August 9, a 31-year-old trainee doctor's body was discovered in a semi-naked condition at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The police later confirmed that she was raped before being killed, leading to nationwide outrage and demands for improved safety measures within hospitals. Since August 12, doctors have been on an indefinite strike, suspending all elective and non-essential services including OPDs.
Ganguly's move follows controversial comments
On Monday night, Ganguly updated his profile picture to black with the caption "New Profile Pic." While his intention appeared to be showing solidarity and support for the victim and the investigation, reactions were mixed. Many criticized the former India captain for what they saw as a superficial gesture rather than addressing the issue directly. Conversely, some believed that Ganguly was finally taking a clear stance after previously appearing indecisive with his comments.

Ganguly clarifies stance on Kolkata crime
Earlier, Ganguly had clarified his remarks. "I said that [stray incident] last Sunday; I'm not sure how it was construed or interpreted," Ganguly told reporters. "It's a terrible thing, as I have mentioned before. The CBI [Central Bureau of Investigation] and police are investigating the matter. It's very shameful what has happened." He added, "The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such a crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe."
SC hearing suo moto petition on Kolkata rape-murder case
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is hearing a suo moto petition on the rape and murder case. The court said it took cognizance of the case because it highlights "systematic issues regarding the safety of doctors across India." Chief Justice DY Chandrachud expressed concern about unsafe working conditions for young doctors, saying, "If women aren't able to go to work and conditions are not safe, we are denying them equality."
