Sourav Ganguly won't replace Ponting as Delhi Capitals coach: Report
Sourav Ganguly, the incumbent director of cricket at the Delhi Capitals, has reportedly declined to step into the role of head coach following Ricky Ponting's departure. Contrary to his previous expressions of interest in the position, he is now advocating for his former team-mate Yuvraj Singh to take up this role. This information was revealed by Bengali newspaper Aajkaal.
Yuvraj Singh likely to be Delhi Capitals's new head coach
The report suggests that Yuvraj's appointment as the new DC head coach is becoming increasingly likely. Discussions between Yuvraj and the franchise have been progressing positively. If all goes according to plan, he could take over as the new head coach from IPL 2025. This development comes after earlier reports indicated that Gujarat Titans were considering replacing Ashish Nehra with Yuvraj.
Delhi Capitals seeks to strengthen batting lineup
According to Sportstar, the Delhi Capitals are planning to enhance their batting line-up for the 2025 IPL edition. With Ponting's exit, they are eyeing someone of Yuvraj's stature to guide their batters. Despite lacking formal coaching experience, Yuvraj has mentored several Punjab batters including Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma over the years. This strategy shift indicates a new direction for the team under potential leadership of Singh.
Delhi Capitals's performance and future plans
In the 2024 IPL season, the Delhi Capitals failed to reach the knockout stages, finishing sixth in the standings with seven wins and as many losses each from their 14 games. Despite boasting several star players, they missed out on a playoff spot due to Net Run Rate. Looking ahead to IPL 2025, DC hopes for a resurgence under new leadership and is keen on rebuilding their squad through the mega auction.
Yuvraj's potential coaching debut and DC's past performance
If Yuvraj accepts the offer from Delhi Capitals, it will mark his first official coaching role. This development comes after DC ended their seven-year association with former Australian captain Ricky Ponting last month. Under Ponting's guidance, the team reached the playoffs three times between 2019 and 2021, including a final appearance in 2020. However, they were unable to secure a place in the final four in recent seasons.
