Records broken in 5th ODI between India and Sri Lanka
India sealed a 5-0 whitewash against Sri Lanka today, courtesy of yet another century from skipper Virat Kohli. Lanka, who batted first, were bundled out for only 238 as Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up a fifer. Then, Kohli got into the attack to cap off what has been a particularly disappointing couple of months for Lanka. Here are the records that were broken yesterday.
Kohli's 30th century and others
Among the current active players, Kohli (74) has the third highest fifty-plus scores in ODIs; only AB de Villiers (77) and Dhoni (75) have more. This was his eighth century against Lanka, the most by any batsman against Lanka. Tendulkar also has 8 centuries against SL. Finally, this was his 30th ODI century and 4th in 2017; only Tendulkar is ahead of him.
Some other interesting records
Kohli became the first captain to register three ODI series whitewashes. This is the first time the visiting team has whitewashed the home team in both Tests and ODIs (min 3-match series). Indian team is the first one to have whitewashed Lanka in Lanka in ODIs. This was India's first 5-0 whitewash against a full-member nation, barring Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, in an away series.
Some personal records and achievements
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's match figures of 5/42 was his first five-wicket haul in ODIs. MS Dhoni completed 100 stumpings in ODI cricket, the first to achieve the feat. Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar both picked up fifers against Lanka, the first time two Indian pacers have managed to do so in the same series. This was the first time India played two wrist-spinners in an ODI.
