Smith fell early on during the day, perishing for 120. Thereafter, Josh Inglis came in and fell for a two-ball duck.
Carey departed 23 runs later for 156. Sri Lanka hit back with Prabath Jayasuriya, who took a fifer.
Jayasuriya managed 5/151 from 38 overs as the Aussies perished for 414.

The match's turning point arrived in the 104th over when Jayasuriya bowled a tossed-up delivery that Mitchell Starc missed, leaving the ball to hit the off-stump.
This was Jayasuriya's fifth wicket in this innings.
Apart from Starc, he also got centurions Smith and Carey. In between he dismissed Josh Inglis.
On Day 2, he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne.

Carey became the first Aussie keeper to script a 150-plus Test score in Asia. He went past Adam Gilchrist, who made 144 each in Kandy (2004) and Fatullah (2006). No other Aussie keeper owns a ton in the continent.
Meanwhile, Carey's 156 is now the fourth-highest score by a non-Asian keeper in Asia.
The southpaw is only behind Zimbabwe's Andy Flower (232* in Nagpur and 183* in Delhi) and SA's AB de Villiers (164 in Dubai).
