1st Test, Sri Lanka suffer against Australia: Day 2 report
What's the story
Sri Lanka 44/3 at stumps on Day 2 of the first Test against Australia in Galle.
The Aussies posted a mammoth score of 645/6d after resuming the day on 330/2.
Overnight centurions Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith started well before the former reached his maiden double-century.
Josh Inglis came in and hammered a ton as well.
In response, the Lankans are in trouble.

Smith fall for 141
Smith was unbeaten on 104 when he started the day.
Day 2 continued in the same vein as both players cashed on. After a watchful first few overs, Khawaja hit the first four of the day right after crossing 150.
Smith also freed his arms thereafter as runs started to flow.
However, Jeffrey Vandersay brought joy for SL, trapping Smith LBW.

Khawaja and Smith ended with a 266-run partnership. It's now the 2nd-highest stand in Sri Lanka-Australia Tests (any wicket). Travis Head and Joe Burns' 308-run stand in Canberra (4th wicket) remains the highest tally.

Khawaja shines with 232-run knock
Khawaja started on an unbeaten 147. After doing well alongside Smith on Day 2, Inglis joined Khawaja and the two added a rapid 146-run stand.
Khawaja fell for 232. His knock was laced with 16 fours and a six.
Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed Khawaja, who raced to 5,867 runs at 45-plus. Earlier, he hammered his 16th Test ton.
Record
2nd Australian to slam a double-century against SL in Tests
Khawaja has become the 2nd Aussie batter to smash a double-century versus Sri Lanka in Tests.
He joined Michael Slater, who hit 216 runs at the WACA in Perth, 1995.
Meanwhile, Khawaja is the 3rd batter in Sri Lanka vs Australia Tests to hit a double-century after Slater and Dinesh Chandimal.

Another massive feat for Khawaja
Khawaja became the first Australian to score a double-hundred in Asia since Jason Gillespie's 201* against Bangladesh in 2006.
The other Aussies to score double-ton in Tests are Matthew Hayden (201* vs India in Chennai), Dean Jones (210 vs India in Madras), Greg Chappell (235 v Pakistan in Faisalabad, 1980) and Mark Taylor (334* against Pakistan in Peshawar, 1998).
Inglis
Inglis shines on Test debut
Inglis' 102 was laced with 10 fours and a six. He consumed 94 balls and struck at 108.51.
It was a solid effort from Inglis who looked in control. He showed his range and the presence of Khawaja helped him. Jayasuriya dismissed Inglis shortly after his century.
This was Inglis' 8th century in First-Class cricket. He has raced to 3,197 runs.

The likes of Alex Carey (46*), Beau Webster (23) and Mitchell Starc (19) helped the Aussies reach 654/6. For the Lankans, Jayasuriya and Vandersay claimed three wickets each. Jayasuriya bowled 60 overs and conceded 193 runs.
