WTC standings: Sri Lanka surpass England with Oval win
Sri Lanka beat England in the third and final Test at the Kennington Oval in London on September 9. The visitors earned a famous win on Day 4 after chasing down 219. Pathum Nissanka scored a ton for them. Notably, SL claimed their maiden Test win against England since June 2014. They have now surpassed England in the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship standings.
SL claim eight-wicket win at The Oval
England rode on substantial knocks from Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope to post 325 runs. England lost seven wickets before reaching 100, while Milan Rathnayake claimed 3/56. In response, Sri Lanka fought from a position of bother to post 263 runs. The Lankans then folded England for a paltry 156, with Lahiru Kumara taking a four-fer. Nissanka's ton helped SL chase down 219.
Sri Lanka fall behind England
As mentioned, Sri Lanka have now overtaken England on the 2023-25 WTC points table. The Lankans now occupy the fifth spot with a points percentage of 42.86. They have three wins in seven Tests. On the other hand, England have slipped to sixth spot, having attained points percentage of 42.19. They have won eight of their 16 Tests as of now.
What about other sides?
Earlier this month, Pakistan plunged to eighth spot on the points table after losing the two-Test home series to Bangladesh. Shan Masood's men have a PCT of 19.05. This was their fifth successive defeat in the championship. Bangladesh are now fourth, having accumulated a PCT of 45.83 (three defeats and as many wins). India, who thrashed England 4-1 earlier this year, continue to lead.
WTC standings: A look at points system
As has been the case, the ICC WTC standings are determined by the percentage of points earned. There are 12 points available for each win in the WTC. Four points are awarded to each team for a draw, with the teams earning six for a tie. A loss leads to no point deduction, while teams can lose points because of slow over-rates.
