Presenting Sri Lanka batters with over 15 Test tons
A terrific century from Dinesh Chandimal powered Sri Lanka on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against New Zealand in Galle. Chandimal added a century-plus stand with Dimuth Karunaratne after opener Pathum Nissanka departed early. SL had earlier opted to bat. Chandimal now has the joint fourth-most centuries for Sri Lanka in Test cricket. Here are the Lankan batters with over 15 Test tons.
Kumar Sangakkara: 38
Kumar Sangakkara, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter, has the most centuries for Sri Lanka in Test cricket. In a career spanning 15 years, the left-handed batter hammered 38 tons. Overall, he has the fourth-most hundreds in Test history, after Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45), and Ricky Ponting (41). Sanga also has 25 centuries in the 50-over format.
Mahela Jayawardene: 34
Former captain Mahela Jayawardene remains the only other Sri Lankan with more than 20 centuries in Test cricket. Jayawardene, who formed a solid partnership with Sangakkara acorss formats, slammed 34 centuries in his 17-year career. In 149 Tests, he racked up 11,814 runs at an average of 49.84. His tally also includes a total of 50 half-centuries.
Aravinda de Silva: 20
Former batting all-rounder, Aravinda de Silva scored 20 centuries for Sri Lanka in Test cricket. In an illustrious career that spanned between 1984 and 2002, de Silva smacked 6,361 runs from 93 Tests at an average of 42.97. His conversion rate remains phenomenal as he owns 22 half-centuries. De Silva also has two double-centuries in the format.
Chandimal among these veterans
As mentioned, Chandimal now has the joint fourth-most centuries (16) for Sri Lanka in Test cricket. He has joined the likes of Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne, Marvan Atapattu, and Tillakaratne Dilshan in terms of Test tons.
