Ramesh Mendis returns to Sri Lanka's Test squad: Here's why
What's the story
Ramesh Mendis has been recalled to Sri Lanka's Test squad for the second match against Australia.
The development comes after pacer Vishwa Fernando and batter Lahiru Udara were released from the initial 18-member team.
Mahinda Halangoda, the Sri Lanka team manager, confirmed the changes, adding that Mendis had joined the squad on Monday.
Mendis will bring the required depth in the spin department after SL lost the series opener.
Performance review
Mendis bounces back with impressive performances
Mendis was earlier dropped from Sri Lanka's Test for perceived moderate bowling run against New Zealand in November.
However, after Sri Lanka conceded 654 for six the series opener against Australia, he has been recalled.
As per ESPNcricinfo, the decision is partly influenced by his impressive form in Sri Lanka's First-Class competition, the Major League Tournament.
Domestic success
His run in Major League tournament
In the ongoing Major League Tournament, Mendis has been in phenomenal form. He has taken 24 wickets at a remarkable average of 21.91. His tally also includes 260 runs with an average of 52 from six innings.
Despite his underwhelming returns against top Test teams, (seven wickets at 40.85), his recent domestic show has earned him a national team spot again.
Upcoming match
Mendis to bolster Sri Lanka's spin attack
Sri Lanka will take on Australia in the second Test in Galle on Thursday.
Considering the inexperience of their spin attack, Mendis's inclusion could be crucial.
In the last match, which handed Sri Lanka their worst Test defeat ever, they played two frontline spinners who were playing their second Test.
Australia, who have already reached the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship final, lead the two-match series 1-0.
