Shubman Gill credits defensive batting for success in England Tests
Indian cricketer Shubman Gill has attributed his improved performance in the Test series against England earlier this year, to a stronger focus on defensive batting. In a conversation with ESPNCricinfo, as quoted by the ICC, he stated, "I worked on my defense a little bit more, especially against the spinners." The 24-year-old has an average of 35.52 after playing 25 Tests. He scored 452 runs in the home series against England.
Gill's current role and recent performance in Duleep Trophy
Gill is currently leading the India A team in the Duleep Trophy. In the first inning of India A, he scored 25 runs off 43 balls at a strike rate of 58.14, hitting three fours during his stay at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite acknowledging that his Test cricket performance has not met his own expectations so far, Gill remains optimistic about improving in future matches.
Gill's strategy and focus during England Test series
Gill emphasized the importance of a strong defense when playing on a turning track. He disclosed that his primary focus during the five-match Test series against England was to play more defensive shots. "If you're playing on a turning track, you should be able to defend a lot more, then you play your scoring shots," he explained.
Gill's Test career and upcoming matches for India
Since his Test debut against Australia in 2020, Gill has scored 1,492 runs from 25 Tests at 35.52. He scored two tons against England as he ended the series with an average of 56.5. Team India is set to play a two-match Test and three-game T20I series against Bangladesh at home from September 19 to October 12, followed by a three-match test series against New Zealand from October 16 to November 5.
