Shreyas Iyer's Test career in jeopardy after Duleep Trophy performance
Shreyas Iyer, who scored a historic ton on his Test debut in 2021, has been struggling to maintain his form in the longest format. His difficulties with short-pitched deliveries have been a significant hurdle in his international career. The middle-order batter also lost his BCCI's central contract following his exploits in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Fresh reports suggest that he might miss the berth for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year.
Iyer's disappointing performance in Duleep Trophy
Iyer's performance in the 2024 Duleep Trophy was less than impressive, as he scored only 104 runs in four innings. This also included a duck and a half-century. A BCCI official recently expressed disappointment at Iyer's performance, stating that there is currently no place for him in the Test team due to his poor shot selection during the tournament.
Iyer's future in Test cricket remains uncertain
Despite his poor performance in the first two matches of Duleep Trophy, Iyer has another chance to prove himself in the third and final round. He is also expected to play for Mumbai in the Irani Cup and India in the Bangladesh T20I series. However, another BCCI official stated that even if Iyer bounces back in the domestic red-ball fixtures, he is unlikely to be included in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad.
Basit Ali lambasts Iyer's performance
Former Pakistani cricketer, Basit Ali, recently expressed his disappointment over Shreyas Iyer's performance in the Duleep Trophy 2024. Iyer, who was dismissed for a duck in the second-round match against India A, has not been selected for the 1st Test against Bangladesh.
