Shreyas Iyer set to play Buchi Babu tournament: Details here
Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, who remains axed from from the centrally-contracted players list, is set to return to domestic cricket. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed that he will feature in the upcoming Buchi Babu Invitational red-ball tournament. The Indian batter will turn out for a solitary match. Notably, Iyer was part of India's ODI squad that lost 0-2 to hosts Sri Lanka earlier this month.
Here's the official statement
MCA joint-secretary Deepak Patil, in a statement, announced that Iyer will play one match in the Buchi Babu tournament. "Shreyas Iyer will play for Mumbai team at the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament organized by Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. He will be playing the Mumbai vs Jammu & Kashmir match to be played from August 27, 2024, in Coimbatore," he said.
Iyer eyes Test side comeback
In February this year, the BCCI terminated the annual contracts of batters Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. The duo had been under the scanner after the BCCI mandated the contracted players to play First-Class cricket. Iyer was dropped for the final three England Tests and skipped the Ranji Trophy quarter-final. And Ishan had been on a personal break. It has been learned that both Iyer and Ishan could now play the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament.
A boost for Mumbai in Buchi Babu Tournament
The Buchi Babu Tournament will also feature India's incumbent T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, who is also eyeing a Test comeback. SKY has played a solitary Test match as of now. With the participation of both Iyer and SKY, Mumbai could have one of their most star-studded sides for the tournament in recent times. India's Test batter Sarfaraz Khan will lead the Mumbai side.
