Shreyas Iyer embraces 'silent hero' tag after Champions Trophy triumph
What's the story
In the wake of India's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph on March 9, captain Rohit Sharma hailed Shreyas Iyer as the team's "silent hero."
The term was used to describe Iyer's crucial role during the tournament.
Despite challenging conditions in Dubai, Iyer stood firm against spinners and adeptly handled short ball tactics.
He scored 243 runs across five innings at an average of 48.60, making him India's top run-scorer and second overall in the tournament behind New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra.
Self-belief
Iyer reflects on his performance and recognition
Speaking to Times of India about his journey, Iyer said: "When I talk about recognition, it's about getting that respect. It was about the respect for whatever efforts I put on the field."
He admitted that sometimes his contributions may go unnoticed, but he was happy with his efforts.
"It wasn't easy to take singles, especially when the bowlers were bowling so tight," he added.
Mental strength
Iyer's approach to batting and confidence
Iyer stressed on his determination, saying: "I don't come quietly (laughs). I come with my full heart and there is something else going on in my mind."
He was confident he would perform in any situation. "Koi bhi situationmai bhejo, karke aauga [Send me in any situation, I'll return after enjoying myself in the middle].
This mindset works for me and this confidence comes after facing rejections and failures," he said.
Challenges
Iyer's journey: A testament to resilience and self-belief
Despite losing a central contract and his Test spot last year, Iyer showed resilience by guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title.
Reflecting on his journey, Iyer said he was immensely satisfied to have overcome the challenges of the past year.
He said, "To be honest it has been a journey and I have learnt a lot in this phase of my life where I got out of the contract after playing the 2023 ODI World Cup."
Future
Iyer's future aspirations and mindset
Looking ahead, Iyer said he wants to keep playing as much as possible. "I want to play as much as I can... I don't want to think too much about it because the more I think, more mind will be taxed," he said.
Meanwhile, Iyer now is all set to lead Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL).
He will be working closely with legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting.
