Comparing the captaincy of Kohli and Rohit in T20Is
On Friday, former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh said he wants to see Rohit Sharma get the opportunity to lead the team in T20Is. Yuvi cited this will ease the workload on Virat Kohli, who is Team India's skipper across the three formats. With Rohit being a successful T20I leader, we compare him with Kohli on basis of Yuvi's comments. Here's more.
What Yuvi said regarding Rohit as T20I skipper?
Yuvraj highlighted Rohit's success and feels he can be T20I skipper. "Earlier there used to be just two formats - ODI and Tests - so it was perfect to have one captain. Now there are three formats and if Virat is feeling overloaded, maybe they should try somebody else for the T20 format. Rohit has been a very successful captain," Yuvraj told Aaj Tak.
Rohit has a better win percentage than Kohli
Kohli has captained Team India in T20Is for a total of 27 matches. Under his leadership, India have won 16, lost 10, with one match not having a result. Whenever Kohli has been rested, it's Rohit that has taken over the mantle. Under Rohit, India have won 12 games and lost three. Kohli has win percentage of 61.53, whereas, Rohit's tally is 80.00%.
Rohit has enjoyed his time as India's T20I skipper
Rohit has done really well as a skipper for Team India. He helped the side win the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, besides the T20I series against Sri Lanka and South Africa as well. He has been praised for his calming head and ability to analyze situations. He looked like a natural leader and that benefited India as they gave rest to Kohli.
How has Kohli been as a leader in T20Is?
Kohli has led Team India well and has grown as a leader. However, he hasn't quite delivered as a skipper in T20Is. There has been a shade of inconsistency and the recent series results show the same. Kohli's team selection and experimentation is quite baffling at times. But he remains the number one choice as of now by the management.
Management should decide on T20I leadership duties
With the World T20 to be held in 2020, India should opt for a change in leadership and the time is now. This will allow Kohli to focus as a leader in ODIs and Tests. However, it's simply the call of the management.
