Time for Harmanpreet to review her captaincy: Shantha Rangaswamy
Former India captain Shantha Rangaswamy was disappointed with Harmanpreet Kaur's captaincy following the completion of ICC Women's World Cup T20 final. She believes the Indian team needs Harmanpreet more as a batswoman than as a skipper. The Meg Lanning-led Australia outclassed India by 85 runs in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. Here is more.
India needs Harmanpreet more as a batter in T20Is: Rangaswamy
"I am sure she will know when to give up captaincy and it is time for her review it. She is a mature person because she is needed in the team much more as a batter than captain, especially in T20s," Rangaswamy said.
The Indian captain didn't find her rhythm in the tournament
This is not the first India choked in a high-voltage clash under Harmanpreet. Team India also lost in the semi-finals of the World T20 2018 in West Indies. However, the Indian captain could muster only 30 runs in five innings, this time around. Her scores in the tournament read as - 2, 8, 1, 15, 4. She could reach the double-digit score only once.
The Indian batters failed as a unit
Rangaswamy also pointed out how the Indian batters failed to deliver besides Shafali Verma. While the Indian teen prodigy Shafali was consistent at the top, her fellow opener Smriti Mandhana failed to get going. Despite getting decent starts, Mandhana could not capitalise upon them. The likes of Veda Krishnamurthy and Jemimah Rodrigues also looked rusty through the course of the tournament.
Rangaswamy slammed the Indian batters
"I am very disappointed that such high calibre batters like Smriti [Mandhana], Jemimah [Rodrigues], Harmanpreet [Kaur] did not click at all. It was a consistent failure of Harman, Smriti, Jemimah and Veda [Krishnamurthy]," Rangaswamy told PTI.
Healy and Mooney dismantled the Indian bowling attack
Australia were all guns blazing right from the first over in the final. While perpetual fireworks from Healy and Mooney propelled Australia towards the 200-run mark, Deepti Sharma and Poonam Yadav restricted the flow of runs towards the end. Chasing 185, India lost both the openers early on. Terrific spells by Megan Schutt and Jess Jonassen helped Australia bundle out India for 99.
