Shane Watson retires from Big Bash League
Veteran Australian batsman Shane Watson has been a revelation in T20 cricket. One of the most reputed T20 legends, Watson has announced his retirement from the Big Bash League (BBL). This ends his professional cricket stint in Australia. The all-rounder will continue to feature in selected T20 tournaments around the globe though. Here's more.
Watson a celebrated figure in the BBL
The 37-year-old Watson's journey in the BBL has been a commendable one. He scored an impressive 1,031 runs in 41 matches at an average of 26.43. Watson slammed one century and six fifties at a strike-rate of 133.72. The best moment for Watson came in 2016, when he won the prestigious BBL trophy with Sydney Thunder. He is also their highest run-scorer (1,014).
Watson wants to savour the memories forever
"I have so many amazing memories that I will savour forever with the one standout being our [tournament] win in 2016. To my teammates, I have played with so many great people and cricketers at the club and I sincerely wish everyone the absolute best for the upcoming seasons," said Watson, who is currently playing the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League.
CA congratulates Watson for his contributions
"In a career which spanned almost two decades Shane made a major contribution to Australian cricket firstly at international level and then in domestic cricket as a significant contributor to the Big Bash," said Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts.
Watson still has things to offer
It remains to be seen which leagues will Watson prefer across the globe. He has been a leading force in the IPL and could continue for another season or two for the Chennai Super Kings, subjected to fitness. After a stunning campaign in the PSL, Watson finally got going in the IPL with a sublime 96 for CSK against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
