What's the story

Bangladesh's cricket star, Shakib Al Hasan, was spotted using a unique method to improve his batting technique during the 1st Test against India in Chennai. He was seen biting on a black strap wrapped around his neck, a technique he devised himself to maintain an optimal head position while playing. This innovative approach is part of Shakib's ongoing efforts to enhance his performance on the field.

Medical challenge

Eye condition necessitates head-positioning tool

Shakib's need for a head-positioning tool stems from an eye condition diagnosed last year, known as Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSC). This medical issue causes fluid accumulation under the retina, potentially distorting vision. To combat this, Shakib has been working on maintaining his head position, which gives optimal sighting of the ball without compromising his technique.

Innovative approach

Self-devised technique receives support

Shakib's mentor, Mohammad Salahuddin, and BCB's chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury have confirmed that the strap technique was entirely Shakib's idea. "He has come up with this strap. It is completely his idea," Dr Chowdhury told ESPNcricinfo. Salahuddin also expressed his approval of this innovative method to correct head position during batting, stating that it was a personal initiative from Shakib and not suggested by them.

Career impact

Shakib's eye condition and its impact

Shakib's eye condition has had a significant impact on his cricket career, causing him to miss several matches this year. Despite these challenges, he made a comeback in international cricket during the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka in Chattogram. He also featured in the shortest format against Zimbabwe and USA, as well as the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.

Performance review

Shakib's performance and future prospects

Despite his innovative approach to batting, Shakib's performance in the Chennai Test was not particularly impactful. He was expensive with the ball and went wicketless. With the bat, Shakib scored 32 and 25 runs. However, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed his support for Shakib at a post-match press conference, emphasizing the hard work and dedication he brings to the team.
