Shakib Al Hasan on verge of accomplishing this elite double
Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is on the verge of accomplishing a massive double in ODIs. He can become only the third all-rounder to complete 7,000 runs and 300 wickets in ODIs. Only Pakistan's Shahid Afridi and Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya own this feat so far. Shakib can get this milestone in the third and final ODI against England. Here are further details.
Why does this story matter?
Shakib is one of the greatest all-rounders to have graced the game, and his records across formats state the same. The 35-year-old belongs to a rare breed of three-dimensional players who can qualify in the XI both as a proper batter and bowler. He is Bangladesh's highest wicket-taker and second-highest run-getter in ODIs. The tally is set to be enhanced further.
Shakib on verge of unlocking massive feat
With 296 wickets in 226 games, Shakib is currently the 14th-highest wicket-taker in ODIs (5W:4). His tally of 6,901 ODI runs is only second to Tamim Iqbal (8,132) among Bangladesh batters (50s:51, 100s: 9). Shakib needs 99 runs and four wickets to complete the double. As mentioned, he would join Afridi (8,064 runs and 395 wickets) and Jayasuriya (13,430 runs and 323 wickets).
How he has fared in the series
Notably, Bangladesh have already lost the series, having suffered defeats in the first two games. Shakib could only manage a 12-ball 8 in the series opener besides claiming 1/45 in his quota of 10 overs. He fared better with the bat in the second contest, scoring 58 off 69 deliveries. His bowling figures read 1/64 in 10 overs.
Only all-rounder with this feat
During the home ODI series against India last year, Shakib became the first all-rounder to complete 3,000 runs and 150 wickets in home ODIs. He tallies 3,115 runs and 174 wickets in 113 appearances in this regard. Jayasuriya is Shakib's closest rival in terms of this record. He struck 3,880 runs and took 119 wickets in home ODIs during his career.
