Jay Shah prioritizes Test cricket after being elected ICC chairman
Jay Shah, the newly elected chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has emphasized his commitment to prioritizing Test cricket. At 35 years old, Shah is the youngest person ever to lead the ICC. He succeeded Greg Barclay in this role during a transformative period for cricket as it prepares for its Olympic debut in 2028. Here are the details.
'Test cricket remains a priority for everyone'
"While the T20 is a naturally exciting format, it is equally important that Test cricket remains a priority for everyone as it forms the bedrock of our game," Shah said in a statement issued by the BCCI. "We must see to it that cricketers are driven to longer format and our efforts will be channelised towards this goal," he added.
Shah's plans for women's and differently-abled cricket
Shah has also revealed his plans to support women's and differently-abled cricket. He stated, "We must champion the ICC's mission further by allocating more resources and attention to Women's Cricket and Differently-abled Cricket." He believes that together, they can empower these essential facets of the sport, making them not just visible but vibrant and thriving.
Shah's tenure to begin on December 1
Shah will officially take over from Barclay on December 1, becoming the youngest ICC Chairman in history. This change in leadership comes after Barclay decided against running for a third consecutive term of two years. Shah is set to relinquish his position as the BCCI secretary at the board's Annual General Meeting, likely to be held later this year or in October.
