How did the match unfold?
Double-faulting and landing drop shots in the net, Williams was far from her best in the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic match. Seeded sixth, Williams just managed 9 winners against 25 unforced errors. Konta started with two games going to serve before she won five on the bounce. The Brit, Konta, ended the match with a score of 6-1, 6-0 in her favor.
GOAT: Historic career of Serena Williams
Williams has won 23 Grand Slam singles, the most by any in the Open era. She holds the combined most Grand Slams among active players; singles (23), doubles (14), and mixed doubles (2), taking the count to 39. Her doubles team with Venus is still unbeaten in Slams finals. She has clinched 7 Australian Open, 6 US Open, 7 Wimbledon and 3 French titles.
Both women playing their first matches since Wimbledon 2018
This was the first competitive tennis match for both of them since they last appeared in the 2018 Wimbledon Open. Williams was the runner-up this year, having lost 3-6, 3-6 to Angelique Kerber. On the other side, Konta, the British number 1, did not have a smooth ride. She exited the tournament in the second round, losing 3-6, 4-6 to Slovak Cibulkova.
Konta pays her respects to the legend
Johanna Konta's comments after the match prove her humility. She stated it is an honor, itself, to get to share the court with Serena Williams. In the post match interview, Konta said, "I felt that I did better than her on the day, but it's still a humbling experience for me to be out here with her."
