Mitchell Santner proud of NZ's CT performance despite Henry's absence
What's the story
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said he was proud of his team's performance at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, despite missing key player Matt Henry in the final.
The fast bowler couldn't play the summit match against India due to a shoulder injury he suffered while taking a catch in the semi-final against South Africa.
Despite this, Henry was the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 10 scalps at an average of 16.70.
Team dynamics
Santner acknowledges Henry's impact on the team
Santner also credited Henry for the team's success.
"He was the leading wicket-taker going into this game, and he's an outstanding bowler, as we've seen," he said.
His ability to nip the ball on wickets that don't look like they should nip was especially noted by Santner, who sympathized with Henry's disappointment of missing out on playing such an important game.
Meanwhile, NZ failed to defend 251 in the final as India tasted glory.
Challenges faced
New Zealand's tournament journey and challenges
New Zealand had its own set of challenges in the tournament, being the only team to play at four venues - Dubai and three in Pakistan.
Moreover, player of the Tournament Rachin Ravindra (263 runs) suffered a head injury during the tri-series in Pakistan that preceded the Champions Trophy.
Kyle Jamieson replaced Lockie Ferguson after the latter got injured playing in the ILT20.
Despite the hurdles, Santner praised his team's resilience and adaptability through their difficult journey.
Player commendation
Santner praises players' performances despite challenges
Santner lauded players who stepped up despite injuries, especially Ravindra's quick return after his head injury and Jamieson's seamless integration into the team.
He praised their performances throughout the tournament, saying, "I couldn't be prouder of the group."
Though they struggled to defend the target in the final match against India, Santner stressed it was their first innings that had been definitive.
Final reflections
Santner reflects on final match performance
Looking back at the final match, Santner said their start was good but they were bettered by the spinners.
He admitted that after a good start, they were looking at scoring about 275 or 280 runs.
"Credit has to go to Kuldeep for the way he bowled straight after the powerplay, and Varun inside the powerplay," he said, praising India's bowlers who pegged New Zealand back at key moments.
