Mo Salah scripts another record: Details here
Mohamed Salah may not have scored as freely this season as the previous one, but the player's impact can never be questioned. The Egyptian scored a brilliant goal for Liverpool against Southampton to keep the Reds in the Premier League title race. Liverpool beat Southampton 3-1 as they, once again, became table toppers with 82 points. Here we analyze Mo Salah's performance in 2018-19.
Brilliant Salah scores his 50th goal for Liverpool
Salah's goal against the Saints was his 50th strike for Liverpool in the Premier League. With this feat, he became the quickest Liverpool player to reach that landmark. Salah achieved the mark in 69 matches and overtook the record previously held by Fernando Torres (72). Only Alan Shearer (66) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (68) achieved the mark in fewer games in the EPL.
Salah had exceeded the expectations in 2017-18
Salah had a superb campaign in 2017-18. His feats for Liverpool, after moving from Roma, exceeded the expectations of one and all. He scored a whopping 32 goals and was two ahead of Harry Kane (30). Salah also made 10 assists. He ended up with 44 goals besides winning Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year and the PFA Player of the Year awards.
Salah is having a decent campaign this term as well
This was Salah's 18th goal of the season in the league. He has made seven assists as well. Only Sergio Aguero (19) has more goals. Salah is in contention for the Golden Boot award. Compared to last season, the numbers might look less for Salah, but that hasn't impacted Liverpool, which have scored 75 goals already. Last season Liverpool managed 84 in total.
An intense title race on the cards
Liverpool have shown that they are going to take the title battle to the wire. The club is two points above Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola's side has a game in hand. It is refreshing to see the Reds scoring late goals this season and winning matches. Their ability to fight and not succumb to pressure at this stage could serve well.
Klopp has his say on Salah's goal
"The season is intense for everyone. What a goal [from Salah]. He couldn't pass because Firmino couldn't get into the right position. The defender could not concentrate on Mo. Wow, what a goal. A good moment," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
