Dale Steyn's world record
Dale Steyn picked up two wickets in India's first innings, one of which was a caught and bowled dismissal of Shikhar Dhawan. The veteran pacer, now, has the most caught and bowled dismissals by a fast bowler alongside Richard Hadlee, both of whom affected 10 such dismissals. He is also the tenth most highest wicket-taker (419 wickets in 86 matches) replacing Harbhajan Singh.
Pandya's eventful first innings
Hardik Pandya's half-century off 46 balls is the joint-second fastest by an Indian on South African soil. Virender Sehwag is the other batsman to have scored a 50 off 46 in 2010 at Centurion. The fastest fifty was by MS Dhoni (off 40 balls) at Centurion in 2010. Pandya is also the highest scorer of this Test (93 off 95) from both sides.
Saha dismissal record and wickets for Indian pacers
Wriddhiman Saha has affected 10 dismissals during the 1st SA-India Test, the most for an Indian wicketkeeper. The previous best was by MS Dhoni 9, against Australia in 2014-15. This is also the first time 4 Indian pacers (Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya) picked up at least a wicket in both innings of a Test.

Jasprit Bumrah made his Test debut in this match. This makes him the 7th Indian player to debut in South Africa. Others include- Ajay Jadeja, Praveen Amre (1992-93), Dodda Ganesh (1996-97), Virender Sehwag, Deep Dasgupta (2001-02), and Jaydev Unadkat (2010-11).
