Bangladesh punched above their weight on Day 3 to power themselves to 298 against South Africa in Durban. Mahmudul continued to frustrate the SA bowlers. He stitched a valuable 82-run stand alongside Liton Das for the sixth wicket. Later, Bangladesh's middle-order rose to the occasion. They powered their side to a total of 298 in the first innings. For SA, debutant Lizaad Williams pocketed three wickets. Elgar and Erwee batted just four overs before rain and bad light wrapped up Day 3.
Mahmudul attains a notable feat
Mahmudul smashed a valiant 137 off 356 deliveries in the first innings. It was his maiden hundred in the whites. He is now the only Bangladeshi cricketer to have slammed a Test ton against South Africa. He also holds the feat of being the only Bangladeshi batsman with a Test hundred in SA. Across three Tests, the right-hander now averages 55.27.
Bangladesh's lower middle-order delivers
Bangladesh's lower middle-order sprung into action to lay a fight back against the Proteas. Wicket-keeper Liton Das (41) took on the onus and piled an 82-run stand alongside Mahmudul for the sixth wicket. Meanwhile, Yasir Ali (22) and Mehidy Hasan (29) added 33 and 51 runs for the seventh and eighth wickets respectively. Later, Mahmudul fired a quick 27 for the ninth wicket.
