Records that can be achieved during South Africa-India ODI series
India set off their ODI campaign against South Africa with their first match at Durban, a venue that hasn't yielded a win for the visitors against the home-side, so far. This ODI series is an opportunity for India to register their first series win against Proteas in South Africa. With many firsts in-sight, this could see the Indian players and team set various records.
A series win against South Africa on their turf
India have not won a bilateral series against South Africa on their soil. They lost 5-2 in 1992-93, 4-0 in 2006-07, 3-2 in 2010-11, and 2-0 in 2013-14. This poor record is something that the men in blue will look to reverse.
An ODI ton in SA will be on Kohli's wishlist
Of the nine countries where he has played ODIs, South Africa is the only place where Virat Kohli is yet to score a century. He has played 11 ODIs, till 2017, in SA. The 6 match-series is a perfect chance for him to claim this record. The Indian skipper is also just 6-catches short of completing a century of catches in the ODI format.
10,000-run milestone for MSD
MS Dhoni is just 102 runs shy of reaching the 10,000-ODI-run milestone, an achievement which would make him the 2nd wicket-keeper in world to do so, after Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara. With 9,898 ODI runs to his name in 312 matches, Dhoni is the 4th highest ODI run-scorer from India after the former greats Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid.
Mohammed Shami close to 100 ODI wickets
With 91 ODI wickets in 50 ODIs to his credit, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is close to reaching the 100-wicket milestone. The pacer, who has been in and out of the Indian side owing to his injuries, is also the third-fastest Indian to take 50 ODI wickets. In the recently concluded Test series against South Africa, Shami picked up 15 wickets.
ODI top spot up for grabs
While South Africa sit on top of the ODI rankings, India are a close second with a point behind. A 4-2 series win or better will ensure India, the number 1 ODI rank.
