Highest individual scores for South Africa in T20 World Cup
South Africa are among the teams to watch out for in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by West Indies and USA. Under Aiden Markram's leadership, the Proteas team will kick-start its campaign on 3 June, against Sri Lanka in New York. Meanwhile, here we decode the highest individual scores by SA batters in the competition.
Justin Kemp - 89* in 2007
Former all-rounder Justin Kemp starred in South Africa's six-wicket win over New Zealand in the 2007 T20 WC game in Durban. The dasher arrived at number after SA lost two early wickets. Kemp paced his knock to perfection and slammed an unbeaten 89 off 56 balls. He smoked six boundaries and as many sixes as SA accomplished the 154-run target.
Herschelle Gibbs - 90* in 2007
The Herschelle Gibbs storm struck West Indies in the very first game of the inaugural T20 WC edition in Johannesburg, 2007. Chasing a stiff 206, SA were off to a flier as Gibbs went after the bowlers straightaway. With the help of 14 boundaries and two maximums, the opener slammed an unbeaten 55-ball 90. SA crossed the line with 14 balls to spare.
Rassie van der Dussen - 94* in 2021
Veteran batter Rassie van der Dussen was instrumental to SA's triumph over England in the 2021 T20 WC game in Sharjah. Batting at number three, van der Dussen smashed a 60-ball 94* for SA. He hit five fours and six sixes at a strike rate of 156.67. His brilliance meant SA finished at 189/2 and later defended the total.
Rilee Rossouw - 109 in 2022
Rilee Rossouw happens to be SA's only centurion in T20 WCs. The southpaw was brilliant against Bangladesh in the 2022 game in Sydney. He completed his century off just 52 balls before ending up scoring 109 off 56 balls (4s: 7, 6s: 8). The swashbuckler powered SA to 205/5 while batting first. Bangladesh were folded for just 101 in reply.
