Ruturaj Gaikwad becomes first CSK captain with IPL century: Stats
Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad scripted history with his second Indian Premier League century at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Gaikwad brought up an incredible ton against Lucknow Super Giants, powering the Super Kings to 210/4 (20). He has become the first player with an IPL ton as CSK skipper. Gaikwad is also the third batter with multiple IPL hundreds for CSK.
Gaikwad slams an unbeaten 108
CSK were down to 49/2 after losing opener Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell. Gaikwad, who opened with Rahane, then took CSK past 100 along with Ravindra Jadeja. He later found support from Shivam Dube as the duo added 104 runs together. Gaikwad played second fiddle and completed a 56-ball ton. He slammed an unbeaten 108(60) with the help of 12 fours and 3 sixes.
Fifth-highest individual IPL score for CSK
Gaikwad now has the fifth-highest individual score for CSK in the IPL. He is only behind Murali Vijay (127 vs RR and 113 vs DC), Shane Watson (117* vs SRH), and Michael Hussey (116* vs PBKS).
First-ever IPL century by CSK captain
As mentioned, Gaikwad is the first-ever player to score an IPL ton while leading the Super Kings. He took over the reins from Mahendra Singh Dhoni ahead of the ongoing season. Dhoni, who had been leading the Yellow Army since the inaugural season (2008), stepped down from the role for the second time. He led CSK to five IPL titles, including one in 2023.
Third player with multiple IPL tons for CSK
Gaikwad has also become the third batter with multiple centuries for CSK in the IPL. Murali Vijay and Watson are the only other players with this record. Notably, Gaikwad's maiden century in the tournament came in 2021. He slammed an unbeaten 101(60) against Rajasthan Royals in Abu Dhabi. However, the Royals chased down 190 with 15 balls remaining.
Third-highest partnership for fourth wicket or below for CSK
As mentioned, Gaikwad and Dube added 104 runs, taking CSK past 200. This is now the third-highest partnership for fourth wicket or below for CSK in the IPL. Only 109* between Dhoni & S Badrinath and 108* between Dhoni & David Hussey are ahead.
