2019 IPL auction: Whom should Rajasthan Royals buy in December?
Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Rajasthan Royals would need to invest wisely in the upcoming auction. Royals released a total of 10 players in the IPL trade window, besides retaining a handful 16 names. Notably, they have retained banned Aussie cricketer Steve Smith, who missed IPL 2018. He will most likely be leading the side. Here we analyze the players Royals need.
How is RR's batting line-up looking?
RR have the aggressive Jos Buttler to give company to Ajinkya Rahane atop. The return of Steve Smith adds solidity at number three. His experience and composure will help the side. Then there is Rahul Tripathi, who needs to deliver big this time around. Besides these players, Royals have a few back-up options too, but they need another big name.
England's Jonny Bairstow could be a sound buy
RR released two stars in the form of D'Arcy Short and Heinrich Klaasen. Now in the auction, they need an opener to add depth and also a versatile player in the middle order. England's Jonny Bairstow could be a pivotal option. He has been among the runs and is a versatile player. In-form Ranji Trophy batsman Milind Kumar could be a handy purchase.
RR have all-round base, but Brathwaite could be added
RR have some good all-rounders including Mahipal Lomror, Stuart Binny, Ben Stokes and Shreyas Gopal. Gopal and Stokes are likely to be the main assets of the team. But they need a suitable back-up as well and that's where someone like Carlos Brathwaite could fit in. He is likely to be available for the whole season as well.
What about their bowling?
Rajasthan's spin department boasts of the promising Krishnappa Gowtham. Then there is Kiwi international Ish Sodhi. And with the spin all-rounders, this section looks decent. In pace department, Jofra Archer and Dhawal Kulkarni are the big names. But they lack a genuine match-winner.
Who can RR look up to in bowling?
RR let go off million-dollar man Jaydev Unadkat after just one season. The main search in the auction will be for a fast bowler. England players Chris Jordan and Tom Curran are available after being released and can be looked upon by RR. In Indian bowling pool, there is the option of the utility man Mohit Sharma as well. He has the desired experience.
Rajasthan can spend upto Rs. 20.95 cr
RR have a salary cap available of Rs. 20.95 crore. They can purchase up to three foreign players. The safest option is to cover each department with one player. They can buy up to six Indian players. At least 2 players should be acquired.
