IPL11: Former Mumbai domestic great Amol Muzumdar to coach Rajasthan
Former Mumbai cricketer Amol Muzumdar has been roped in as Rajasthan Royals' batting coach for the upcoming season of IPL. He is expected to oversee RR's preparation camp in Jaipur, starting on Tuesday at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. This comes as a huge boost for the franchise, who would look to gain vital impetus from one of India's finest domestic players.
Muzumdar's playing career
The 43-year-old former Mumbai player scored a bagful of runs during his days and helped Mumbai perform well in the domestic tournaments. He also represented Assam and Andhra in his final years in Ranji tournaments. In 171 first-class matches, Muzumdar amassed 11,167 runs at an average of 48.13. The right-handed batsman slammed 30 centuries with a top score of 260 runs.
What will Amol bring as a coach?
Back in his days, Amol never got a chance in the Indian team since Team India had 'Fab Four'. But his captaincy experience and run scoring ability will be of help to the RR squad, especially since he knows Indian conditions well.
Amol and RR a solid pair
Both the batting coach and the franchise will get a lot from this partnership. This is Amol's first big assignment as a batting coach despite helping young players earlier. Success here will pave a way for the future. The Royals, under Steve Smith, have a solid squad and Amol's wisdom will bring a lot of stability especially for youngsters.
A look at Royals support staff
Rajasthan's head of cricket is Zubin Bharucha. Former Indian spinner Sairaj Bahutule is the bowling coach. Paddy Upton is the team's head coach. Finally, former RR skipper Shane Warne was roped in as the team's mentor.
