ICC Test Rankings: Root enters top three, Kohli slips

What's the story

England captain Joe Root has entered the top three in the latest ICC Test Rankings for Batsmen. Root, who scored 218 and 44 in the first India-England Test, occupies the third place. He dispatched the likes of Marnus Labuschagne and Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who slipped to number five. Meanwhile, James Anderson rose to number three in the ICC Test Rankings for Bowlers.

Root

Root rises to third after smashing fifth double-century

Root, who has been in sublime form of late, gained significantly. He now has 883 rating points and is behind Kane Williamson (919) and Steve Smith (891) in the rankings. Root notched his fifth double-century in Test cricket and a first against India. He now has 20 centuries in Test cricket. Notably, Root has three 150-plus scores in the last three Test matches.

Kohli drops down to fifth, Pujara moves to seventh

Meanwhile, the 32-year-old Kohli managed scores of 11 and 72 across the two innings. Kohli had missed the last three Test matches against Australia due to a paternity leave. He has 852 rating points and is behind Labuschagne (878). India's Cheteshwar Pujara dropped one place to the seventh position in the rankings. He has 754 rating points. Pakistan's Babar Azam displaced Pujara.

Indian batsmen

Rahane and Rohit fall, advantage for young Shubman Gill

Ajinkya Rahane, who managed scores of 1 and 0 in the first Test, dropped to 11th. This saw Henry Nicholls, Ben Stokes, and David Warner gain one position respectively. Rohit Sharma fell to the 23rd position after a disappointing match. Meanwhile, youngster Shubman Gill rose to the 40th position after keeping up with his promising start.

Bowlers

Anderson gains three spots, Ashwin and Bumrah rise

The top two places in the ICC Test Rankings for Bowlers are held by Pat Cummins and Stuart Broad. Anderson, who claimed five wickets against India, gained three places to be third (826 rating points). Indian spinner R Ashwin, who claimed nine scalps, including a six-for, rose one place to be seventh (771 rating points). Jasprit Bumrah rose one position to be eighth (769).
