Rooney: Certain former England players are jealous of current team
England legend Wayne Rooney called it quits on his international career after playing his final match, which was a friendly against USA at Wembley. England won the match 3-0. Rooney thinks the current crop of England players can bring glory to the nation. However, he said some former players are bitter of the success, this present team has achieved but didn't take names.
Rooney was a member of England's 'Golden Generation'
England never had a more star-studded squad than when Rooney joined the team. The team boasted of icons like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Michael Owen, John Terry, and Frank Lampard. But they could not achieve much together despite phenomenal performances with their respective clubs. Rooney believes this might be the reason some are jealous of the present batch.
Rooney's comments on his colleagues
Rooney said, "I know there are some ex-players I've spoken to who can't come to terms with England doing well. That is wrong. I want England to do well. I am proud to have played for England so many times and I always have been."
Rooney wants Kane to break his record
Before the farewell match, Harry Kane, the current captain of the England team, made a presentation along with FA Chairman Greg Clarke for Rooney. Later, during an interview, Rooney said that he, himself, had asked Kane to give him the award since he believes the 25-year-old can go past his tally of 53. Till date, Kane has scored 19 goals for England.
The present team has great potential, proven at World Cup
The 2018 World Cup showed that the current England players are not chokers like the Golden Generation batch. They work together seamlessly and have found a new spark of life under Gareth Southgate. With players like Marcus, John Stones (whom Rooney praised wholeheartedly), Lingard, Kane, England have a young and solid squad, which can impress in the coming years.
