Roma vs Liverpool: Records broken in the fixture
Goals, drama, action and heartbreak, the Champions League fixture between Roma and Liverpool had it all. After a 5-2 defeat in the first leg, Roma had to do the impossible task to turn things around at the Olimpico and they almost pulled it off. In the end, they just fell short as they claimed a 4-2 victory. Here are the records that were broken.
Liverpool will face Real Madrid in UCL final
Liverpool will now meet Real Madrid in the final. These two sides last met in the final of any tournament in 1981. In that final, Liverpool had claimed a 1-0 victory. Last night's own goal by Milner was the first own goal by a Liverpool player in a Champions League game since 2007-08. John Arne had scored an own goal against Chelsea.
Liverpool's front three have been rampant
With 29 goals between them, Mo Salah (10), Roberto Firmino (10) and Sadio Mane (9) are now the highest scoring trio for any club in a single Champions League campaign. The Liverpool trio overtook Real Madrid's BBC (Bale, Benzema and Cristiano) who had scored 28 goals between them in 2013-14.
Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum on cloud nine
Firmino has 10 goals and 7 assists in the Champions League this season. He became the first player, this decade, with at least seven goals and seven assists in a season. Georginio Wijnaldum scored his 19th goal for an English club last night. He now has 11 goals for Newcastle and 8 goals for Liverpool. However, this was his first goal away from home.
Liverpool have been on a free scoring run this season
Liverpool are the most rampant side this season. They are only the second team to have scored at least 20 goals in away games in a single UCL campaign, after Real Madrid in 2013-14. Liverpool became the third team to score 40 goals in a single campaign after Barcelona (45 goals in 1999-00) and Real Madrid (41 goals in 2013-14).
Rome has been breached
Roma had never conceded a goal at home in the Champions League this season. However, they conceded twice in the opening 25 minutes after having kept a clean sheet in each of their five previous Champions League home games. With 13 goals scored over both legs, Roma vs Liverpool is the highest ever scoring UCL semi-final, overtaking Monaco v Juventus (4-6) in 1998.
Mane makes it 9 from 10 games
Sadio Mane is on cloud nine. The Liverpool forward scored his ninth goal in the Champions League in his 10th appearance. No player has scored more in their opening 10 games in the history of the competition. Mane now shares this unique record with Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane and Lazio icon Simone Inzaghi.
Dzeko was the last Roman warrior standing
With 8 goals to his name, Edin Dzeko has now scored the most number of goals for an Italian team in a Champions League campaign since Samuel Eto'o, who scored eight for Internazionale in 2010/11. Dzeko has also scored in each of his last five Champions League games, the longest ever run in the competition for a Roma player.
