Rohit Sharma to join Punjab Kings in IPL 2025?
Rohit Sharma, the Indian cricket team's captain and a key player for Mumbai Indians (MI), is facing uncertainty regarding his future with the franchise. This follows his removal from the captaincy role ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, sparking rumors that he may be released by MI and enter the mega auction in 2025. The Punjab Kings have shown interest in acquiring his services if he becomes available.
Rohit's IPL legacy and potential suitors
Rohit has an impressive IPL record, having led MI to five of their IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. He is considered one of the greatest Indian cricketers and shares the record for the most successful captain in IPL history with MS Dhoni. If not retained by MI for the upcoming season, he is expected to be highly sought after in the mega auction due to his leadership skills and on-field performance.
Punjab Kings express interest in Rohit
Punjab Kings have expressed interest in Rohit, especially as they will need a new captain following Shikhar Dhawan's retirement. Despite co-owner Preity Zinta denying rumors of the franchise trying to sign him during the 2024 IPL season, the franchise's head of cricket development, Sanjay Bangar, did not dismiss the possibility for 2025. "If Rohit comes in the auction, I certainly believe he is going to go for a high price," said Bangar on RAO Podcast Youtube channel.
A look at Rohit's IPL journey
Rohit began his IPL journey with Deccan Chargers (DC) and played for them in the league's first three seasons. He won the emerging player award when DC clinched the trophy in 2009. With six IPL titles under his belt, Rohit is the joint-most decorated player in IPL history alongside Ambati Rayudu. He has participated in all 17 seasons of the league, scoring 6,628 runs at an average of 29.72 across 257 matches.
