Rohit Sharma becomes first player with multiple tons for MI
Mumbai Indians' Rohit Sharma smashed a scintillating century against Chennai Super Kings in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter at the Wankhede Stadium. Rohit (105*) carried his bat but couldn't help MI chase down 207. The hosts were restricted to 186/6 and lost by 20 runs. Rohit, who found no support, became the first player with multiple IPL tons for MI.
Rohit leads this list
As mentioned, Rohit is the first player to have scored multiple tons for MI in the IPL. His only other IPL ton came in 2012, for MI against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. Notably, MI won that match by 27 runs. Sanath Jayasuriya, Sachin Tendulkar, Suryakumar Yadav, Lendl Simmons, and Cameron Green are the only other IPL centurions for MI.
Rohit was MI's lone warrior
MI openers Rohit and Ishan Kishan added 70 runs before Matheesha Pathirana dismissed the latter and Suryakumar in the same over. Rohit rebuilt the innings with a 50-run stand with Tilak Varma (31). None of Hardik Pandya, Tim David or Romario Shepherd fired as MI were restricted to 186/6. Rohit, who shone alone, smashed a 63-ball 105* (11 fours and 5 sixes).
First Indian to 500 T20 sixes
During the match, Rohit became the first Indian to complete 500 sixes in T20 cricket. He reached the feat with his third maximum. As per ESPNcricinfo, only Chris Gayle (1,056), Kieron Pollard (860), Andre Russell (678), and Colin Munro (548) are ahead of Rohit in terms of T20 sixes. Virat Kohli (383) trails the MI star among Indian batters.
Other feats attained by Rohit
Rohit also overtook veteran batter Suresh Raina to become the leading run-scorer in MI-CSK IPL matches. He also became the first player to complete 5,500 runs for MI. The swashbuckling opener reached the feat with his 30th run. Rohit smoked his 8th T20 ton. He also owns 74 fifties, scoring 11,417 runs. Rohit has clocked 6,472 runs in the IPL at 30.10.
