Rohit Sharma set to break Sehwag's Test sixes record: Details
Indian cricket team captain, Rohit Sharma, is preparing to lead his squad in the forthcoming home Test season. The two-match Test series against Bangladesh, set to begin on September 19, offers him an opportunity to achieve several milestones. In the current World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle, Sharma has already amassed 700 runs across nine matches with an average of 46.66. This includes three centuries and three half-centuries.
Sharma's 6-hitting prowess in Test cricket
Sharma has a chance to surpass Virender Sehwag's record of most sixes by an Indian in Tests. During India's last Test series against England, Sharma overtook former India captain MS Dhoni to become India's second-highest six-hitter in Test cricket. He ended that series with 84 sixes, surpassing Dhoni's tally of 78 maximums. Now, only Sehwag stands ahead of him with 90 sixes from 103 Tests.
Sharma's journey toward a century of sixes
Sharma also has the potential to become the first Indian batter with 100 or more sixes in red-ball cricket. Only three batters, Ben Stokes (131), Brendon McCullum (107), and Adam Gilchrist (100), have achieved this feat in Test cricket. During the T20 World Cup 2024, Sharma became the first batter to hit 600 sixes in men's international cricket and currently holds a record of 620 sixes.
Sharma's journey toward 50 centuries in international cricket
Sharma is also on the verge of scoring his 50th century in international cricket. He currently has a record of 48 hundreds and could potentially enter the top 10 list of most centuries in international cricket. If successful, he would become only the third Indian batter after Virat Kohli (80) and Sachin Tendulkar (100) to have 50 or more hundreds.
Sharma's imminent achievement of 1,000 runs in 2024
Sharma is just 10 runs away from completing 1,000 runs in international cricket this year. He has accumulated 990 runs from 20 matches at an average of 45 with three centuries and six half-centuries. If he achieves this feat, he will become the first captain to complete 1,000 runs in the year 2024.
