Rohit names Iyer as India's 'silent hero' in CT triumph
What's the story
In the aftermath of India's triumphant ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, captain Rohit Sharma described Shreyas Iyer as the team's "silent hero."
The Indian team clinched their third Champions Trophy title with a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in Dubai.
During the tournament, Iyer was instrumental in solidifying the middle order and building important partnerships, particularly during difficult situations.
Performance
Iyer's contributions highlighted by Sharma
Sharma praised Iyer's consistent performance throughout the tournament, especially his ability to form vital partnerships with other batters.
"Not to forget the silent hero Shreyas Iyer throughout the tournament was brilliant. He was very, very important in that middle phase for us," said Sharma.
Iyer ended as India's top run-scorer and second overall in the tournament with 241 runs in five matches.
Key contribution
Iyer's pivotal role in the final
In the final match against New Zealand, Iyer was instrumental in scoring 48 runs and stitching a vital fourth-wicket partnership of 61 runs with Axar Patel.
Although he fell short of a half-century, his steady partnership kept India on track for their third Champions Trophy title.
"When such performances happen... it feels good," Sharma said about Iyer's contributions.
Dominance
India's unbeaten run in the tournament
India's road to the Champions Trophy title was an unbeaten one, with the Men in Blue winning five games on the bounce.
The bowlers regularly dominated opposition teams, while the batters easily chased down every target.
Meanwhile, this victory comes just 10 months after India's T20 World Cup win last June, making it India's second ICC trophy in a year time.
