Rohit Sharma becomes batter with joint-second-most sixes in ODIs: Stats
Indian captain Rohit Sharma has become the batter with the joint-second-most sixes in One-Day Internationals. The 37-year-old reached the landmark with his only maximum in the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo. He equalled West Indies legend Chris Gayle's tally of 331 maximums in the format. Playing his 265th ODI, Rohit has raced to 331 sixes as he matched Gayle's tally of 331. As per ESPNcricinfo, the Indian opener is now only behind Pakistan's Shahid Afridi (351) in terms of sixes in ODIs. Notably, former SL all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya (270) is the only other batter with 230-plus ODI sixes. MS Dhoni (229) trails Rohit among Indians.
100 away sixes for Rohit
Rohit's 35 in the 3rd ODI took him to 10,866 ODI runs at an average of 49.16. He owns 31 tons and 57 fifties. Two of his three ODI double-tons have come against SL. Playing his 115th ODI away (home of opposition), Rohit has scored 3,703 runs at 39.81 with the help of 10 tons and 20 fifties. He now owns 100 away sixes.
Over 300 sixes as an opener
The second ODI saw Rohit become the second batter after Gayle (328) to complete 300 maximums while opening the batting. Playing his 176th innings as an opener, Rohit now owns 303 sixes as the tally also includes over 8,800 runs at 55-plus. Jayasuriya (263) is the only other batter with 180-plus ODI sixes while batting at the top.
Most sixes in international cricket
Earlier this year, Rohit became the first batter to accomplish 600 international sixes. He now owns 620 maximums at this level. Rohit is one of only two Indian cricketers with over 80 sixes (84) in Test cricket, the other being Virender Sehwag (91). Meanwhile, the 37-year-old is also the only batter with over 200 T20I sixes (205).
2,000 ODI runs against Sri Lanka
Meanwhile, Rohit also surpassed 2,000 runs versus the Lankans in ODI cricket. In addition to six tons, he has smashed nine fifties. His batting average is 45-plus against Sri Lanka. Sachin Tendulkar (3,113), Virat Kohli (2,600-plus), and MS Dhoni (2,383) are the only other Indian batters with over 2,000 ODI runs against SL. Overall, Rohit became the sixth batter with this feat.
