India vs Bangladesh: Will KL Rahul feature in 1st Test?
India's Test skipper, Rohit Sharma, has indicated that KL Rahul may be included in the squad for the series opener against Bangladesh, starting September 19 in Chennai. This revelation was made during the pre-match press conference on September 17. Rahul's Test career has been marked by periods of exceptional performance and fitness issues. After participating in 50 Tests, he holds an average score of 34.08 with eight centuries to his name.
Rohit's support for Rahul amid selection questions
Rohit suggested that Rahul could play in the middle order, potentially at number five in the Chepauk Test. He expressed his support for Rahul, acknowledging that every player experiences a slump in form at some point. "There are very few, only a handful of people in world cricket, who have had a very smooth ride," said Rohit during the press conference.
Rohit highlights Rahul's quality
Rohit advised Rahul to understand his role and what he needs to contribute to the team during challenging times. "I think, with KL, the kind of quality he has, everyone knows about it," said Rohit. He emphasized that they have communicated their expectations clearly to Rahul since he took over as captain. "It's important we give him a clear message that this is what we expect from you," added Rohit.
Rohit on Rahul's recent form and future prospects
Rohit also highlighted Rahul's recent performances, including a score of 86 against England in Hyderabad. "He got a 100 in South Africa, got an 80 in that first Test match in Hyderabad and then got injured," said Rohit. He expressed hope that Rahul will continue his good form from where he left off in Hyderabad. This statement further reinforces the captain's confidence in Rahul's abilities as a key player for the Indian cricket team.
Rahul set to bat at number five
Rahul is all but likely to bat at number five in the upcoming Bangladesh Test series. He hasn't batted at this position before. However, the star batter has 50-plus scores across four different positions in Tests - opening, number three, number four, and number six. His hundred at number six came in the Centurion Test against South Africa last year.
