IND vs WI, 3rd ODI: Rohit Sharma eyes these milestones
India will take on West Indies in the third and final ODI of three-match series at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Friday. India have taken an unbeaten lead of 2-0, having won the first two games. On Friday, when Rohit Sharma-led side will be up against WI, they will aim to register a whitewash against them by winning the last game.
Why does this story matter?
If India manage to whitewash the Kieron Pollard-led outfit on Friday, Rohit will join the elite list of captains from the country to lead the side to a series sweep. India won the ODI tournament opener against WI by six wickets on Sunday. In the next game, they bested the Caribbean outfit by 44 runs to take an unassailable lead of 2-0.
When did India record their last ODI series whitewash?
India recorded their last whitewash victory in ODIs in 2017 against Sri Lanka when they blanked the Lankans 5-0 under Virat Kohli. The Men in Blue achieved this feat during their SL tour. India's last whitewash win at home came in 2014. It also came against SL during a five-match series. Kohli was leading the Indian side during the said series as well.
Rohit can join an elite list of captains
If India win the third ODI, Rohit will become only the eighth captain from the country to guide them to a series sweep. It will also be India's first whitewash against WI in ODIs. Here are the seven players who have registered this feat as captain - Kapil Dev, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane.
250 sixes for India
On Friday, Rohit will have a chance to become the first player from India to smash 250 sixes in ODIs. He is five sixes shy from reaching this milestone. So far, he has smashed 245 sixes in 229 ODI games. At the moment, Rohit has fourth-most sixes in ODIs after Shahid Afridi (351), Chris Gayle (331), and Sanath Jayasuriya (270).
