Roger Federer may come out of retirement: Here's why
Tennis legend Roger Federer is contemplating a return from retirement for an exhibition match against Rafael Nadal, according to his agent Tony Godsick. The 43-year-old Swiss star last played a professional tennis match at the 2022 Laver Cup in London. He is now considering a non-playing role in the sport. However, Godsick hinted that Federer might be enticed back into action for one final showdown with Nadal if the right opportunity presents itself.
Godsick hints at potential Federer-Nadal rematch
In a conversation with Marca, Godsick recalled the massive crowd of 51,000 spectators who witnessed Federer's match against Nadal in South Africa in 2020. He stated, "We like to do big things." He further added, "If there is an option to beat that one day, I'm sure Roger will consider it." This statement has fueled speculation about a potential rematch between the two tennis giants.
Nadal's future and his relationship with Federer
Nadal, 38, continues to participate on the ATP Tour but has openly discussed his retirement plans on several occasions. He doesn't have much time left in his professional tennis career. Despite their intense rivalry on court, Federer and Nadal share a close friendship off it. They even paired up for doubles at the Laver Cup two years ago - a tournament similar to golf's Ryder Cup that was co-founded by Federer and Godsick in 2017.
Godsick's dream for Federer and Nadal post-retirement
Godsick expressed his desire for Federer and Nadal to lead Team Europe once Nadal retires. He envisions a scenario where "Roger Federer is captain and Rafael Nadal as assistant and then the other way around." He believes this arrangement would extend their involvement in the sport. Godsick emphasized that while their on-court rivalry was special, their off-court friendship is even more unique, serving as an example that all competitors can maintain good relationships.
Federer vs Nadal on ATP Tour
Fans witnessed the rivalry between legends Federer and Nadal for over two decades. Nadal has a 24-16 lead over Federer in the ATP head-to-head series. The duo last clashed in the 2019 Wimbledon semi-final, where Federer prevailed.
