    What's the story

Five Indian wrestlers were among the six, who were killed in a road accident in Maharashtra's Sangli district.

Five others have also been injured in the mishap. The wrestlers who were traveling in their SUV to Kundal, rammed into a tractor which was coming from the opposite direction near Vangi village.

The accident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.

    Data

    Untimely end to promising careers

The victims have been identified as Vijay Patil of Ramapur , Shubham Gharge of Sangli, Saurabh Mane of Karad, Akash Desai of Satara and Avinash Gaikwad of Sangli and the driver Ranjeet Dhanawade.

    Tragedy

The accident happened in Sangli district

The wrestlers belonged to the Kranti Kushti Sankul institute in Sangli. Their coach, Vijay Mohite was also in the vehicle but got off at his village, a few minutes before the mishap.

The injured have been shifted to the closest hospital in Miraj.

A case has been registered against the tractor driver, who went absconding after the mishap.

    Road safety concerns

    Second incident of the month

The wrestlers were returning from a tournament in Pune's Satara district and the accident took place around 1 am in the night.

A similar incident occurred on the Delhi-Panipat highway earlier this month, in which five national power-lifters had died.

This seriously raises concerns about road safety in the country especially for those traveling in the late hours of the night.
